April 3, 2025: HMGU Girl’s Day

On April 3, 2025, the Institute of Biological and Medical Imaging (IBMI) at Helmholtz Munich took part in Girls’ Day 2025.

Girls’ Day is a nationwide initiative aimed at encouraging teenagers to explore career paths beyond traditional gender roles. Despite progress, certain professions are still often perceived as more suitable for a particular gender, which can limit aspirations and access to role models. Addressing these stereotypes is essential to fostering diversity and equal opportunities in the workforce.

Bioengineering remains a field where women are underrepresented, making initiatives like Girls’ Day especially important. At IBMI, we welcomed female high-school students into our laboratories, offering them insight into the daily work of researchers. They were introduced to key scientific concepts, such as fluorescence, and learned how innovative research contributes to a better understanding and management of human diseases.

Through activities like this, projects such as GLUMON support outreach and engagement efforts that aim to inspire the next generation. By sparking curiosity and promoting inclusion, we hope to encourage more young women to consider careers in STEM.
