At Medical University of Graz (MUG), we have a common strategy and vision:

“Pioneering Minds – Research and Education for Patients’ Health and Well-being”

This means that all our actions are characterized by an attitude based on scientific research and a focus on the individual. We see a human being as a unique physical, mental and emotional entirety including his or her social environment. This attitude provides the foundation and direction for clinical, translational and basic research, student education and postgraduate training and ultimately results in the best patient care.

MUG became an independent university in January 2004; and has been recognized the best young university in Austria several times. However, since the foundation of the Faculty of Medicine, in 1863, both medical research and education have been conducted with great commitment and exceptional success. An excellent infrastructure, the Medical Science City Graz (MSC Graz) merges the space, content and strategy of the basic research institutions at the Medical University of Graz including MED CAMPUS Modules 1 and 2, applied clinical research and patient care at University Hospital as well as knowledge and technology transfer in ZWT (Center for Knowledge and Technology Transfer in Medicine). The Biobank Graz with its more than 20 million biological samples, and many other institutions provide the perfect research infrastructure, which rises to a fully new level on the premises of the Campus and encourages interdisciplinary networking within the MUG community.

MUG counts with around 1500 academic university staff/researchers, responsible for around 2500 publication per year. In total, 530 clinical trials were carried out by MUG, and currently there are around 440 ongoing research projects with external funding. The Division of Endocrinology and Diabetology, part of the Department of Internal Medicine, is alone responsible for 627 scientific publications and 131 theses and dissertations in the past 10 years. The scientific impact of their research is recognized by more than 27400 citations in Web of Science is the same period.
